Shans celebrate National Day

Shans celebrate National Day

Not too far from Thailand's northern border yesterday, Shans, or Thai Yai as they are known here, gathered for their national day.

It was the 66th anniversary of Shan National Day and the first time the Shans have been able to hold such an event publicly after sealing a truce with the Myanmar government last year.
After years of war against the Myanmar government, the Shan State army is highly experienced.
The Shan state has its own army and it played a prominent role in yesterday's celebrations, parading and showing off its readiness if the conflict with the Myanmar government resumes.

The current peace is an uneasy one and the Myanmar forces are still in combat with other groups, most notably the Kachin.
